The Legacy of Lines

Pear Blossoms in Ink

Pen and ink has long been a favorite medium of mine. My uncle did several pen and ink drawings and they hung in my parents home when I was a child. I remember staring at them for hours. There was one line drawing in particular that I remember tracing with my eyes - I could see where he had pressed hard, where he let up, and where he paused to think about where to go next. I even imagined how he moved his arm to get the curves - and I think he did - rather than turn the paper.

He led me to the magical world of pen and ink. All of which has now led me to colored pencils, where I am finding another world filled with line drawings, paintings and expressive mark making.

Pear Blossoms in Ink is now for sale. It is matted, ready for you to frame with an 8in x 10in frame:

Thinking Ahead

Spring Cherry Blossoms

Somehow this time of year I always start thinking about next year - and all the things I'd like to get done in that bright shiny new year! Of course, I rarely get everything done in the year and many times I change the goal posts - but I always look forward to what new directions I want to take.

I did some brainstorming this past week - a few hours later it occurred to me that there are a few kinks to work out with what I want to achieve - but I have plenty of time to resolve those issues. One of my goals will definitely be to work larger on a more regular basis, I'm already starting that goal and have something in the works. I am working on that larger piece this week, but I'm not quite ready to show it. So I thought I'd show you an earlier change of season piece - those blossoms were overtaken by leaves and now those leaves are falling to the ground.

For my American readers, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving.

A Lovely View, colored pencil on paper

A Lovely View

Can you imagine sitting underneath a shower of dappled pink light? I think this little junco rather enjoyed his view underneath the spring blossoms on my redbud tree. Sunlight filtering through delicate pink petals must have made for a peaceful canopy under which to sit and rest your wings for a spell.

Here are a few details of the drawing:

There are two schools in the colored pencil art world - those who hide their marks (works like this often look like an oil painting) and those who don't. I'm decidedly of the latter camp, I think there is something intimate about being about to see the marks the artist made. I also think it creates movement in the drawing.
