Here's a sketch I made tonight in the pocket moley flower book.
I was still thinking about edges (lost, found, hard, soft) here...because I am more familiar with pen and ink work it was easier for me to think about the edges than with painting. That means you'll be seeing more pen and ink in the near future...

Rose, this is just beautiful.
lovely, Rose. Do you start with pencil or go straight to ink?
I do like pen and ink a lot. This reminds me of a woodcut almost.
And ink is a lot more forgiving than most people think. HOwever it does help to plan a little before placing your marks.
I really like this. Very lively... really draws you in.
This is beautiful. I love your boldness with ink. Something I am always timid with using :)
This is outstanding!
Jo, thanks...two favorites of mine, flowers and pens.
Anita, in pencil I did a brief boxy outline of the whole flower, a couple of petal outlines (the two in front at a sharp perspective and a couple on the sides) and then I just went for it with the pen. I'm finding that if I do too detailed an outline drawing I struggle with the edges...if I just try and follow the drawing and make decisions as I go, it comes together better.
Jeanette, all my p&i is woodcut looking...I've always loved woodcuts. Yes, ink can be forgiving in a loose style. I think ink is one of those mediums where time and experience really help. I definitely have a better understanding of what to watch out for and where to be careful with ink than I do with paint.
Teresa, thanks, it was a relaxing exercise for me personally.
Ann, I have studied pen and ink longer than anything else, it's a comfort medium for me - no color temperatures to worry about, even the value decisions come slowly as it takes time to make things darker! :D
Valerie, thanks, it's wonderful when it just flows.
really nice line work :D I'm really enjoying your flower sketches
I'm really enjoying your series of flower sketches, Rose. I'd have commented on the latest but this one is so lovely, I had to scroll down to find it again. One of the problems with Google Reader, I often enjoy a post on the run and then miss commenting.
Lovely work, keep it up!
