January VSD: A Peeling

A Peeling
6 in x 7.5 in
colored pencils on toned and flecked paper

Above is my entry for the January Virtual Sketch Date. Thanks to Jeanette Jobson for the reference and for doing the administration work this month.

I did my first attempt in acrylic. I was not thrilled with it. But then I saw Jeanette's inspired entry and I just had to have another go.

This was done on some orange handmade paper, you can see little flecks and irregularities. The paper surface is not smooth, normally not my choice for colored pencils, but actually I think it really helped with all the tremendous texture on that fruit.

  3. Hey my favourite medium, great choice Rose. :-)

I think choosing a toned background works well here and I agree that the texture of the paper adds to the piece because of the texture inherent in the subject. I like your stroke technique(I think I always say that)and your use of colour.

When looking at your rendering, I get the sense that you enjoyed yourself. I hope you did! Congratulations on giving this subject another try (in a different medium no less). :-)

  5. Thanks everybody. This was really fun to do. It was a nice change from the paints...I'm not leaving the paints, I do like them, but as a change of pace, this was great.

  6. Love the textured, toned and handmade paper choice here. Many of the VSD's are very good. This one is, too, but it is also very original and artistically interesting.

It is so fascinating to see all the different renditions of the same reference. We all interpret it oh so differently.

  13. Rose, your colored pencil version is velvety and warm. CP work takes so long that I don't do it very often, but responses like this one make me want to give it a shot. Thanks!
