Portrait of Jeanette Jobson, work in progress, 12 in x 12 in
This is a work in progress portrait that I started last night. The subject is the ever intriguing and ever kind Jeanette Jobson. Thanks to Jeanette for letting me use the photo for a little practice.
This was done with a 6B lead in my lead holder on drawing paper. I did some of this with the broad stroke technique, but not all of it. The paper isn't great for that sort of stroke, but it was good to try doing a portrait with it.
Clearly, there is more work to be done!

ReplyDeleteYou're heading in the right direction on this Rose and the likeness is there, just a few proportion issues happening.
ReplyDeleteMeasurements are key to achieving likenesses in portraits. Drop a few lines from the eyes to the mouth, find where the eyes sit on the plane by using a ruler or your pencil to see where the irises line up and how the hand fits into the mix. You're not far off, just a few tweaks to bring it into position.
As for the hair, take your time and study values. Squint! It works wonders. :) Then breakdown the hair into sections and don't overwork it. You're nearly there!
Thanks Jeanette! I will do the things you suggest...today I moved the studio (out of the bedroom into its own room) so I'm too tired to focus, but hopefully tomorrow!
